Harald Szeemann - Individual Methodology is the result of an in-depth investigation into the curator’s archives. The research was able to draw on invaluable and little-known documentation thanks to the opportunity provided by Harald Szeemann’s family to access the Fabbrica rosa, the factory that the exhibition maker took over in 1988 to establish the headquarters of his archive and agency in Maggia, near Locarno, in the canton of Ticino, Switzerland.
The eight participants in the 16th session of the École du Magasin approached Harald Szeemann’s methodology and practice as curators rather than as exhibition historians, with the aim of connecting his past to their present. The editorial approach aims to shed light on the working methods that Szeemann refined throughout his career and which, unlike his exhibitions, have left few traces. The book thus serves as an informative and analytical handbook. It draws on previously unpublished documents and the testimonies of some of his closest collaborators. The authors’ ambition is for their book to become a resource for those interested in curatorial practices and the history of exhibitions. Enthused by their research, they pay tribute to Harald Szeemann through the title, borrowed from his world of “individual mythologies.” Similarly, the four sections—situations, concepts/processes, works, and information—echo the subtitle
